  • Twitter traffic spikes during the Super Bowl

    Posted by Jeremy

    4 February, 2009

Twitter is growing fast - according to a recent blog post by Sandra Hanchard, Senior Analyst - Hitwise Asia-Pacific, Twitter's year-on-year growth rate has increased by 517.9% (w/ending 10 January 2009 compared to the same week last year).

(Note: If you've just read this post up to this point and you're confused as to what Twitter even is - Watch this! Twitter in Plain English)

Twitter has gained a lot of media attention over the last 6 months. News of the Hudson River plane crash and Mumbai Terrorist attacks spread through Twitter at a rapid pace, providing real-time, raw data of each event as they unfolded.

More recently, Twitter users were 'tweeting' through every single second of the Super Bowl. It was very interesting to see the results for a search on "touch down" across all of Twitter. This graph shows huge spikes on Twitter traffic with every touch down scored (and the lead up excitement and post-celebration!) - crazy stuff!

We're looking forward to tracking future events and the reaction on Twitter.
