Happy 10 Years, Google
9 October, 2008
For Google's recent 10th birthday they celebrated with something right up my alley - they're allowing folks to search their oldest stored index from January 2001.
Now, take your mind back to what you were up to (Internet wise) in 2001 and see what juicy stuff you can dig up !
A few finds I found interesting:- In 2001 Wikipedia is not one of the top search results for pretty much all things as it is today.
- A depressingly larger number of the websites in the 2001 index are not online anymore, but often they are accessible via the Internet Archive.
- In 2001 results for "Brett Daniels" are dominated by the magician, today I have broken in results for both the first page and the second page!
- In 2001 there are 0 results for "Zoe Moxon" :O
- It's interesting to see how dramatically results for a term can change. Terms like "Cloverfield" and "Iron Man", for example. What does the future hold for other relatively unknown terms?
- In 2001 one of my old favourite websites thought this video was pretty funny.
- In 2001 Wikipedia is not one of the top search results for pretty much all things as it is today.
