Camden Schnitzel Tragedy
1 December, 2010
Foreword
Sometimes a story is so moving, so emotionally charged, such a defining legacy of the times, that one is left with no words better to describe the feeling of being adrift in a sea of schnitzel than a silent, approving nod. What follows is that story, the story of how Twitter sensation SchnitMyDadSays began...
The TaleLet me tell you a tale... a tale of heartbreak and sadness, of triumph and joy, of breadcrumbs and batter...
It was a Wednesday, just after noon, the Schnitzel hunger meter was going nuts. Nothing else would cut it. Not even a Ranch burger. It was time for some breaded meat.
We were as keen as mouth on Schnitzel. Shockingly, it had been well over a week since our last Schnitzel. Thankfully today we'd rectify this indiscretion... or so we hoped. We headed down to our reliable place of Schnitzel eating - The Argyle. Walking in we were presented with a specials board that seemed to be missing something... it didn't take us long to put our finger on what that was.
An area of the blackboard had been recently erased... the smudges of a not long gone scrawling was still barely visible as an untimely reminder of great things that once were, now gone. There was no Chicken Schnitzel Special.
Our minds began to wander, back to better days. How could this be? The Argyle had featured the Chicken Schnitzel on the specials board day after day for as long as we could remember. It was not only a mainstay of the venue, but a deliciously crumbed Specials board tradition! In utter disbelief I built up my confidence, now bruised and battered (not in the schnitzel sense), and motioned to the counter to discover our fate...
"What happened?" I gulped, afraid of the truth.
The lady behind the counter seemed to be proud of The Argyle's new initiative, as if she had some involvement with the idea, and yet it was clear this was not the first time today she had needed to say these words...
"We decided to try something new."
I didn't have much of a reply to the foreign language hitting my ears. Perhaps a surprised sound resembling "oh" escaped my mouth. Perhaps not.My mind was now gone, replaced by disappointment and a distinct lack of breaded meat, cooked to perfection, surrounded by fresh, steaming chips, and perhaps some other nearby green stuff that didn't really matter too much...
I backed away from the counter with a confused look on my face and managed to inform the others, despite my shaky state. For a bunch of saddened blokes, it was time to go.
Heads hanging low, we marched slowly out of The Argyle that day and vowed never to return, until the Schnitzel Special reclaimed it's rightful place upon the Specials board.
That day has come.
Epilogue
We returned to The Argyle after many moons. We ate. We were happy. But this was only the beginning of our new Schnitzel adventures... for the continuing adventures of a fine bunch of blokes with a great Schnitzel tradition check out SchnitMyDadSays on Twitter.
And remember... may the Schnitz be with you, always.
