Anti-IE6 Campaign gains traction, Webciety '09 take the reins
14 April, 2009
Something that has been bringing a smile to my face recently is seeing some great initiatives to try and kill off IE6 from being a browser anyone in their right mind supports. Unfortunately this has been nigh-impossible due to it's obscene market share.
We've seen 37signals (Basecamp) drop IE6 support and .net magazine's Bring Down IE 6 campaign not to mention those crazy Norwegians successfully roll out a huge anti-IE6 campaign that Siteflex has recently taken inspiration from. Hopefully some more Siteflex users will opt-in and join the fight! More on that later no doubt...
Webciety '09 Sydney should be fantastic, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the top web-based companies at the top of their game - and so quite rightfully it makes a lot of sense to outright dismiss IE6 users from the Webciety website completely - which is exactly the bold move Webciety '09 Sydney has taken on their new website. It seems the Webciety has moved on!
A little ironically the above splash page has had to use the IE PNG transparency Javascript hack and has been tested for IE6. Here's hoping the Webciety '09 Sydney initiative makes a difference.
In the mean time it seems by the end of 2009 IE6 will be well and truly on the way out, if not already an old joke of the past along the lines of the PC gaming world's Daikatana.
Keep an eye on the Twitter #ie6 hash tag for developments as they happen, join the Facebook group: IE6 Warning Campaign, and of course theres the IE6: Do Not Want Wiki which has links to a whole stack of goodies.
